Danny Boyle’s idea was simple and beautiful - Pages of the Sea created a moment to say goodbye, together, to the millions of men and women who left their shores during the war, many never to return. At 32 beaches across the UK a huge 30 metre sand portrait of an individual from WW1 would be created by an artist, and then, as the tide rose, it would be washed away and we would take a moment to say a collective goodbye. Carol Ann Duffy had written a poem especially for the moment, to be read beside the portrait. This is the result.
